6, 000mw: Babalola frets over gas supply

By Chinedum Emeana, Port Harcourt

As the December target set by the federal government for the attainment of 6, 000 megawatts of electricity generation draws near, Dr. Olarenwaju Babalola, Nigeria’s minister of power is hoping that there would be enough gas supply to the power stations to ensure that they perform at optimal capacity.
The minister, who was on an inspection visit to Afam Power Station and Okoloma Gas Plant in Rivers State over the weekend, acknowledged the challenges of gas supply which are require to work the power plants to generate electricity, but assured that agencies of the government responsible are working to ensure adequate that the commodity is available.
However, he expressed confidence that the target of power generation would be achieved, as well as the availability of gas supply to make it happen.
He said he was pleased with facilities on ground at the gas and power stations that he visited, noting that there are adequate facilities to transmit all power generated from the power station.
He pointed out that gas was essential to meeting the power target, but noted that the challenges faced in the Niger Delta region which affected gas supply are now in the past.
